The Dow Jones industrial average was down 26 points, or 1.3 percent, as of 12:22 p.m. Eastern time.
The index dropped more than 1,000 points in the opening minutes of trading.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index was down 24 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,946. The Nasdaq composite fell 26.9 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,480 points.
Treasury notes rose. The yield on the benchmark 10-year note fell to 2.02 percent from 2.04 percent on Friday.
